I decided to get the feel of being oncall for at least once. So I tagged along Dr. Jolyn for her call on friday. Dr. Jolyn bought McD as dinner for both of us. We had lots of talk outside medicine thus we got to know each other much better later. Dr. Jolyn is from a Doctors Family! She jokingly tell me that it is a Indian family tradition to either have a doctor, or lawyer, or engineer from each family otherwise they would not be happy. We laughed out loudly every now and then as we chat. Actually it was going to be the last day I'd see Dr. Jolyn in HSI. She is going on holiday for Christmas for the following week. When she comes back, I'd have gone back to Seremban. I must say, she's a really nice lady to be with. =)
We were chatting all the time when we were on call. She told me a lot of interesting stories. It was fun. Until around 11.00pm, she left me to one of the doctor on call room in CCU to rest and she went back to hers in ward 7B. I didn't have the mood to read so I just lied on the bed and wait. Finally at 12.30am, Dr. Jolyn called and we went down to A&E to see a patient. We stayed there for an hour managing patient then went back to our respective room afterward.
The feeling of being in hospital at night is so..... different. It is so quiet and peaceful and not at all scary. Maybe because it is a new hospital, everything looks so nice and beautiful. I was a little excited even though being exhausted after a day work. Slowly I fell asleep....but only for an hour and I woke up. Throughout the night I was only sleeping intermittently waking up every now and then just to make sure I didn't miss a call. However there was no more call from Dr. Jolyn...
Next day, I got up and washed my face at 8am. Then meet up with Dr. Jolyn. She didn't sleep much as there were other two cases she managed last night. I wasn't able to see because Dr. Jolyn didn't call me. She told me there was nothing much to see and hence she didn't wanna wake me up from sleep. But to be honest, deep in my heart, I rather she had called me. I'm not blaming her and I know she was just being nice. =)
So the on call ended with not much thing to see. At least I get to experience it.
I went home straight and had a bath. Though tired, I was not able to sleep. I wonder what is it like to be at work straight after postcall... I do not think I'll be able to focus postcall. Perhaps it is not a good idea to continue work without proper rest. It could be dangerous should we made wrong judgment when treating patients. However, since the government has decided put houseman on day off after call, I guess the quality of care could be improved to a certain level as less walking zombies are going to manage patients in the hospital. (It is also a good news for many housemen because that means they would get many holidays in a week! Apparently not good to MOs though....sorry for them)
